Born in Singapore, Andrew was the guitarist and
founding member of the fusion groups, Jazzman in 1983 and later, Room 430 in
1987, that won the second prize in the Yamaha Band Explosion, Singapore, in
which Andrew also won a Best Guitarist Award. In 1989, he began his
professional career as a music arranger for some of the top record companies in
Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In 1990, he was commissioned to
produce and arrange the musical finale for Singaporešs National Day Parade. As a
keyboardist, he has also backed top performing artists, including Dick Lee, in
his sell-out musical, Fried Rice Paradise in 1991 and Jacinthašs One Woman Show
in 1992.In the same year, he co-founded the production and record company Tune
Factory, which had the first and only 24-track digital recording studio in
Singapore to date. The following year, he co-founded another production house,
Music for Masses, producing commercials for clients including McDonald's,
7-Eleven, American Express, Westin Hotels and Mandarin Hotel. Signed to Elite
Music, Taiwan, in 1994 as an exclusive music arranger, Andrew also started
composing and producing the following year. In 1996, he co-produced "Unexpected
Song", a musical of Andrew Lloyd Webbers' works re-arranged into 4 suites
recorded in London's CTS Studios with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and
Ambrosian Singers.
In 1997, he composed, arranged and produced for BMG/Taiwanšs
world music artist and Erhu virtuoso, Kenny Wen in his release "A Flower is not
a Flower", which was also a collaborative effort with top producers, Ryuichi
Sakamoto in New York and David Jerng in Taiwan. Also in 1997, he produced "Bow
on a String", an album featuring Paganini-award violinist Ara Malikian,
"Dreaming a Dream" by flutist Ellie Lai, and "Passion on Strings" by Pipa player
Shirley Lu, Asiašs top tenor Warren Mok's "My Lover is Sleeping" with LA
producer Jorge Calandrelli, "The Seed of Love" by harpist Chieh Shuen and the
original soundtrack for the Hong Kong movie "Intimates" directed by Jacob
Cheung. In early 1998, he founded production and record company Expect Music,
and signed 3 top artists from China, Jessica Lu on Sanxian, Guo Ya Zhi on Suona
and Zhang Hong Yan on Pipa.
